The commune is located at the bottom of the Great Insular Mountain, “Gr. Inselsberg”, 916,5m MSL amid the paradise of nature Thuringian Forest, near “Rennsteig”.

The villages Fischbach, Schmerbach, Schwarzhausen and Winterstein are agrarian communities by nature and are part of the commune Emsetal. The villages are surrounded by mountains and greenery.
